Lust in the Mirror

Artwork Lust in the Mirror

On this EP I sing against rigid gender roles. Against the expectations placed on us, and against the pressure to adapt just to be seen.

In the title track, “Lust in the Mirror”, I break away from the male gaze and from the expectation of having to be desirable. I wrote it with Chiara Foschiani and Ema Heber-Suffrin. “No One Is Watching” is about being alone without feeling lonely.

A Place Called Home

My debut album from 2023: eleven songs in German, English and French, recorded with producer Missincat.

« Un disque où elle pose, en anglais, en français et en allemand, sa (belle) voix sur une électro-pop low tempo, riche en atmosphères frissonnantes et en textes très actuels. »Télérama, 2023

About me

Portrait of Coco Aikura in profile, wearing a red top and large hoop earrings

I sing about empowerment, about vulnerability and about the hope that change is possible.

I’m a singer, pianist and songwriter from Lüneburg, Germany. I’ve been playing the piano since I was six. At 19 I spent 14 months hitchhiking around the world with a backpack, learned the guitar on the way and played on the streets in Mexico City, Sydney, Central America and Southeast Asia.

In 2012 I co-founded the French-German band Yalta Club in Paris. Two albums followed, festivals and TV appearances in France and Germany, including ZDF-Morgenmagazin and France 3, and shows opening for Madness, Les Wampas and Dionysos. Since 2022 I’ve been playing solo.

For me, politics doesn’t run alongside the music. I hold a doctorate in political science and I’m a professor of social work at IU International University of Applied Sciences. I founded mosaique – Haus der Kulturen, an integration project in Lüneburg, and Utopia, a start-up centre for social and sustainable businesses. What I experience there ends up in my songs.

On stage I play alone, with guitar, keyboard and a looper that slowly builds a full arrangement. I’ve played mostly in northern Germany and in Paris, at venues like Pan Piper and Péniche Antipode.

What I sing about

Lust in the Mirror

A song about no longer seeing your body as something to be judged, but as something personal, natural and free. Finding beauty in yourself without having to perform it for others.

The Raft

A song about friendship, about dealing with pain, and about the pull between comfort and escape. I wrote it with Damien Reynolds.

Bella Ciao

I wanted to reimagine the iconic resistance anthem as a gentle, multilingual piece, sung in Italian, English, French and German. Not a nostalgic cover, but a quiet yet powerful act of resistance: we belong together.

Meine Wut kriegst du nicht

No matter how loud the world rages, anger is a force of its own that you can direct. It doesn’t belong to those who want to divide us. The song grew out of the political situation and stands for diversity and human rights.

Memories Stay

A song that refuses to forget what we have lived and whom we have loved. Written with Damien Reynolds on a hike in northern Spain, in the middle of nowhere, where two strangers met and became friends.

Home

A song about fleeing and searching for a home. I wanted to give a voice to people who have fled to Europe.

Not Like You

Against the ideas of how you’re supposed to be, and for a life you decide for yourself.

Workshops

I run songwriting workshops for school classes in Germany and France. Besides music, I’m a professor of social work with a doctorate, and in the workshops I bring the two together: music, writing and a look at social issues.

How it works

In my workshops we write verses in small groups, in German, English or French, about social or personal topics. In the end they become one song we write together.

What it can look like

What it’s about

Languages
New vocabulary in German, English or French, through music and writing your own lines.
Reflection
We talk about current issues and what each person wants to say about them.
Creativity
Writing lyrics and making music in a foreign language, hands-on.
Openness
Getting to know other countries and their culture through their language.
